The Pelorus Mail Boat has been a lifeline for people living in far-flung bays, inlets and jetties of the Pelorus Sound/Te Hoiere for more than a century.

In this section

Mail was first delivered to the Marlborough Sounds by government steamer in 1869. Initially the steamer delivered all the mail to one location for residents to collect, but as the population grew the steamer put the mail ashore at several small post offices throughout the area.

In 1918 the government put the mail service out to private operators and the mail run, just as it is done today, was created.

The Mail Run Cruise

I have done 100's of boat trips in numerous countries but this one beat them all.

The Marlborough Sounds are spectacular!!! The most beautiful scenery and some fantastic sightings of seals, stingrays, a pod of at least 100 dolphins and loads of rare seabirds!! It was very cool playing "postman" for the day and meeting the residents of this rather remote part of the world.

The boat was clean and plenty of space inside and out. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the bathrooms!
