Step aboard the iconic Pelorus Mail Boat as we cruise deep into the quietest corners of the Marlborough Sounds, stopping at two remote family farms where you’ll be warmly welcomed to wander through evolving, coastal gardens tucked into the hillsides. You'll visit:

🌿 The Foote Family Farm –

The Foote family has called this remote property home since 1881, and today Trevor and Kelly Foote are the fifth generation to farm its 640 hectares. Over the past 20 years, the farm has seen big changes, and the Footes are excited to share their story. Discover what life is really like on one of New Zealand’s most rugged and isolated farms—accessible only by boat and completely off-grid. This is not just a tale of survival, but of resilience, ingenuity, and thriving in harmony with the land. From raising and teaching children by correspondence, to living off the land, diversifying income, navigating Covid lockdowns, and finding joy in the everyday, the Footes offer a truly inspiring glimpse into life in Pelorus Sound. Wilson Bay Farm is also one of the longest-standing stops on the iconic Pelorus Mail Boat route.

 🌿 Gerards/Hopai Bay Farm –

For over 30 years, the garden surrounding the Hopai Bay homestead has been lovingly shaped into the hillside, weaving along old sheep tracks, through regenerating native bush, and down to the sea. Scattered throughout are treasures gathered from the farm, forest, and foreshore, creating a sense of discovery at every turn. A diverse mix of exotic and native plants thrives in the high-rainfall, low-fertility clay soils, giving the garden an almost subtropical feel. Unique and ever-evolving, this is a true Sounds garden—where the farm may always come first, but the garden remains at its heart.

Enjoy a bush walk at Jacobs Bay, stunning scenery at every turn, and entertaining commentary from our friendly local crew.

Along the way, keep an eye out for dolphins, seals, and other marine life that call this pristine place home.
